1911 Vickers formed Vickers Ltd (Aviation Department) and produced one of the first aircraft designed to carry a machine gun, the FB5 (fighting biplane) Gun Bus. Sadly the airship disintegrated upon its second trip out of the floating hangar on the evening of 23 September 1911. Further designs and difficulties followed although non-rigid machines including “Sea Scouts” (popularly called blimps) proved generally less troublesome than the larger rigid examples. 1897 Vickers bought the Maxim Nordenfelt Guns and Ammunition Co for £1.3 million, and in the same year acquired the Naval Construction and Armaments Co for the bargain price of £425,000. They adapted the design of the Maxim gun as the Vickers machine gun, which was the last major design Hiram Maxim himself worked on. It was also re-worked in literally dozens of different cartridge sizes and sold all over the world, and was scaled up to larger calibres, particularly for the Royal Navy as a 0.5 inch model).

My exploration of the story of British Manfacturing

This was owned by Vickers, English Electric and Bristol (holding 40%, 40% and 20% respectively). The Supermarine operation was closed in 1963 and the Vickers name for aircraft was dropped in 1965. Under the terms of the Aircraft and Shipbuilding Industries Act BAC was nationalised in 1977 to become part of British Aerospace, which exists today in the guise of BAE Systems.

The Vickers 6-ton tank was the most successful, being exported or built by other nations under licence. The Vickers A1E1 Independent tank design was never put into production but credited with influencing other nations. During the Second World War, Vickers built large guns and tanks; the Valentine tank was a design that they had developed privately. In 1868 Vickers began to manufacture marine shafts; in 1872 they began casting marine propellers and in 1882 they set up a forging press. Vickers produced their first armour plate in 1888 and their first artillery piece in 1890. 1999 Rolls-Royce plc acquired Vickers plc61; Vickers Ulstein and Kamewa products were added to Rolls-Royce’s gas turbine activities, making Rolls-Royce a global leader in marine power systems.

Hydraulic Power Units

The 20% share was eventually acquired from receivership by Vickers and GEC (EE’s parent company). In 1990, the Cosworth automotive engineering group was purchased. In 1927, Vickers agreed to merge their armaments and shipbuilding and heavy engineering activities with the Tyneside-based engineering company Armstrong Whitworth, founded by W. This merger was to take effect on 1 January 1928 and would give Vickers shareholders ownership of two-thirds of the new company.

Soon after the War, Vickers produced the Valentia and Viking flying boats (in conjunction with S. E. Saunders). 1955 the name of the shipbuilding division changed to Vickers-Armstrongs (Shipbuilders). 1927 The company became Vickers-Armstrongs after a merger with Armstrong Whitworth. The latter’s shipyard at High Walker on the River Tyne became the “Naval Yard”. 1980 Vickers bought Rolls-Royce Motors to form one of the largest engineering companies in the country56.
The new business was incorporated and named The Wolseley Tool and Motor Car Company and works were purchased at Adderley Park, Birmingham. 1939 All aircraft construction activities transferred to Vickers-Armstrongs at government request68. John Pedersen’s design for a semi-automatic rifle was trialled by the British between WW1 and WW2. The British version of the rifle was made by Vickers, and as result this version of the Pedersen rifle is usually called the Vickers Rifle. 1939 All aircraft construction activities transferred to Vickers-Armstrongs at government request36.

In 1928, the Aviation Department became Vickers (Aviation) Ltd and soon after acquired Supermarine, which became the “Supermarine Aviation Works (Vickers) Ltd”. In 1938, both companies were re-organised as Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Ltd, although the former Supermarine and Vickers works continued to brand their products under their former names. 1929 saw the merger of the acquired railway business with those of Cammell Laird to form Metropolitan Cammell Carriage & Wagon. Further diversification occurred in 1901 with the acquisition of a proposed business which was incorporated as The Wolseley Tool and Motor Car Company and in 1905 the goodwill and patent rights of the Siddeley car. In 1911 a controlling interest was acquired in torpedo manufacturer Whitehead & Company.

Design Services

This yard later passed into the hands of the nationalised British Shipbuilders in 1977, was privatised as Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd in 1986 and remains in operation to this day as BAE Systems Submarine Solutions. The British tested John Pedersen’s design for a semi-automatic rifle between World War I and World War II. Vickers made a British version of the rifle, and their version of the Pedersen rifle usually goes by the name “Vickers Pedersen Rifle”. The company was also involved in the manufacture of 6,000–10,000 (6181 is often quoted) Luger pistols in 1922–24. These 1906 pattern pistols were in 9 mm calibre and part of a contract for the Dutch military.
